Over 6,300 individuals in 14 districts across the country have been affected by intense rainfall caused by the active southwest monsoon conditions, according to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC).
The majority of those affected, more than 4,300 people, reside in the Colombo District.
Reports indicate that the adverse weather conditions have caused significant disruptions in these areas.
Meanwhile, the Meteorology Department has forecasted that showers or thundershowers will continue in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, and North-western provinces, as well as in the Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts in the upcoming hours.
Furthermore, the department has issued warnings of fairly heavy rainfall, with amounts exceeding 75mm, in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Puttalam, Galle, and Matara districts.
In response to the prevailing conditions, the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has extended landslide warnings to include the Kalutara, Ratnapura, Galle, Kandy, and Kegalle districts.
This precautionary measure aims to ensure the safety of residents and mitigate potential risks associated with landslides.
