In an effort to stabilize egg prices and ensure affordability for consumers, Sri Lanka has decided to import 92.1 million eggs from India.
The decision was made at a Cabinet meeting, following a request from the State Trading Corporation to address concerns over shortages and market fluctuations.
The import of eggs from India will be carried out through three Indian companies recommended by the Department of Animal Products and Health. The orders are expected to cover a three-month period.
Since March, Sri Lanka has been relying on egg imports from India due to significant shortages caused by a forex crisis impacting the import of animal feed. In response to the crisis, the decision was made to import eggs from India.
The extension of credit lines from India to Sri Lanka has played a crucial role in enabling the import of essential food and fuel, providing assistance to the island nation during its economic challenges.
