According to a report by the investigation team of the Public Administration and Local Government Ministry, the rendition of the National Anthem at the 2023 LPL (Lanka Premier League) opening ceremony, performed by popular singer Umara Sinhawansa, did not adhere to the melody described in the Constitution.

The report, submitted to the Public Administration Ministry secretary on Friday (18), highlighted that Umara Sinhawansa had sung the National Anthem in a high pitch, contrary to the medium tone specified in the Constitution. Additionally, a key lyric was mispronounced during the performance, which was captured on video and circulated on social media platforms.

In light of these findings, the secretary recommended that the investigation team consult the Attorney General to determine appropriate actions to be taken. The team also advised the prompt implementation of regulations for the National Anthem when used in national events, as well as specifying the consequences for any violations of these regulations.
