Walana anti-Corruption police Task Force Panadura says that an employee of the Department of Motor Traffic has been arrested for mastermind vehicle fraud.
He illegally earned millions of rupees by changing the data and entering the names of other persons of the registered vehicles in the computer system of the DMT.
Investigations revealed that about 250 telephone calls were exchanged between the main suspect and the employee at the Department of Motor Traffic.
A jeep worth around Rs.20 million that was used by the suspect had also been registered fraudulently. Letterheads, rubber stamps, a stock of forged documents related to the MTD, forged registration certificates belonging to public and private institutions, revenue licences, fake documents certifying the sale of condemned vehicles, a large number of letterheads of public and private institutions, a large number of copies of complaints about lost vehicles issued by Police stations, a large number of blank forms of Common 172 type of the Government, forged rubber seals belonging to insurance companies and motor vehicle inspectors were taken in to custody from the suspect’s house.
Police believe that nearly 400 assembled vehicles were registered in the Department of Motor Traffic fraudulently. Police conducting further investigation.
