Sri Lanka’s rising table tennis star Taavi Samaraweera has made history by winning two gold medals at the WTT Youth Contender Montenegro 2026, held in Podgorica from November 3 to 6.
Taavi claimed the Under-11 and Under-13 Boys’ Singles titles, becoming the first Sri Lankan player to win two gold medals at a single WTT Youth Contender tournament.
His latest achievement follows previous gold medal successes in Italy and Slovakia, further strengthening his reputation as one of the promising young talents on the European youth table tennis circuit.
In the Under-11 category, Taavi delivered an impressive performance, defeating Kazakhstan’s top-ranked player 3–0 in the quarter-finals before recording an identical victory against a leading Indian opponent in the semi-finals.
He continued his dominant run in the final, beating Singapore’s representative 3–0 to secure his first gold medal.
Competing in the Under-13 category against players up to two years older, Taavi once again demonstrated his talent and determination.
He defeated a Singaporean opponent 3–0 in the round of 16, followed by a 3–1 victory over Kazakhstan’s top player in the quarter-finals and a 3–0 win against Slovakia’s representative in the semi-finals.
In the final, Taavi produced another outstanding performance to defeat Montenegro’s leading player, a former Under-13 World Youth Contender champion, 3–1 and secure his second gold medal.
The remarkable double-gold triumph marks another significant milestone in the young Sri Lankan paddler’s growing international career.
