Eight spill gates of the Deduru Oya Reservoir have been opened by one foot each, according to the Department of Irrigation.

As a result, authorities have begun releasing 5,500 cubic feet of water per second from the reservoir into the Deduru Oya.

The Department of Irrigation has warned that water levels in downstream areas of the Deduru Oya could rise due to the increased water release.

Residents living in areas downstream of the reservoir have therefore been urged to remain highly vigilant.
