Two spill gates at the Victoria Reservoir opened automatically this afternoon (07) due to heavy rainfall in the Central Highlands, which has caused water levels in the upper catchment areas of the Mahaweli River to rise rapidly.
Accordingly, spill gates No. 1 and No. 2 opened automatically by 0.701 metres and 0.707 metres, respectively.
The total volume of water currently being released from the Victoria Reservoir into the Mahaweli River stands at 159 cubic metres per second.
Meanwhile, spill gates No. 3 to 8 remain closed.
Authorities have warned that the reservoir is nearing its maximum capacity and that water levels could rise further if rainfall continues.
Residents living in low-lying areas along both banks of the Mahaweli River downstream of the Victoria Reservoir, including the Randenigala area, have been urged to remain vigilant about rising water levels.
