A special meeting has been convened this morning to identify urgent measures to address the flooding situation in Colombo following heavy rainfall last evening.

Colombo Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar said representatives of relevant government institutions are expected to participate in the discussion.

She said the meeting was called after several parts of the city experienced flooding due to the heavy downpour.

The Mayor explained that Colombo’s drainage system is designed to handle approximately 30 millimetres of rainfall. However, the city received nearly four times that amount last evening, creating an exceptional situation.

Acknowledging the disruption caused to residents, she said the Colombo Municipal Council intends to work closely with relevant government institutions to identify and implement immediate solutions.

Representatives from the Police, Tri-Forces, Divisional Secretariats, the Governor’s Office, the Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation and the Urban Development Authority are among those expected to attend the meeting.
