Heavy crowds were reported at the head office of the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) today (02) as a large number of people arrived to obtain Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TIN).

The IRD has urged the public to use its online facility to obtain TIN numbers and avoid visiting regional offices unless absolutely necessary.

The submission of a valid TIN number has become mandatory from today (02) for several transactions and services.

Accordingly, individuals must provide a TIN number when opening an account at a bank or financial institution, obtaining approval for a building plan, registering a motor vehicle or renewing a vehicle revenue licence.

The requirement also applies to registering land or ownership of land, registering a business, transferring shares in a company incorporated in Sri Lanka and obtaining a credit card.
