Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath has emphasised the importance of responsible journalism in combating misinformation, strengthening public trust and promoting peace and understanding among communities.
He made these remarks while delivering the welcome address at the 63rd General Assembly of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), which commenced in Colombo today (01).
Addressing the gathering, Minister Herath highlighted the challenges arising from rapid technological advancements, noting that although access to information has expanded, distinguishing factual information from misinformation has become increasingly difficult.
He stressed that broadcasting institutions have a vital responsibility to ensure the dissemination of accurate information and enhance public understanding.
Referring to Sri Lanka's diverse society, the Minister highlighted the media's role in encouraging dialogue, mutual respect and understanding among different communities. He also emphasised that technological innovation should ultimately serve humanity and broaden access to knowledge.
"Peace cannot be sustained by diplomacy alone," Minister Herath said, underscoring the importance of mutual understanding among people and the role of responsible broadcasting in bringing societies closer together.
The five-day General Assembly and associated meetings are being held under the theme "Media for Peace and Humanity: Truth, Trust, and Transformation."
