Strong winds of up to 70 kmph, rough seas and showers or thundershowers are expected in several sea areas around Sri Lanka today (October 25), the Department of Meteorology has warned.
The department said showers or thundershowers would occur at several places in the sea areas around the island.
South-westerly winds are expected to blow at speeds of 30–40 kmph and could strengthen to 50–60 kmph in sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Pottuvil via Kankesanthurai, Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.
These sea areas are expected to be rough at times, with wave heights reaching 2–2.5 metres in waters extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara.
Temporarily strong gusty winds of 60–70 kmph and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers, the department cautioned.
Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology has advised naval and fishing communities to refrain from venturing into deep-sea areas bounded by 10°N–20°N and 80°E–95°E until further notice.
The warning comes as a depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify further.
