Environmental organizations and wildlife activists staged a protest outside the Ministry of Environment, demanding legal action against those responsible for shooting iconic tusker Kavantissa.
The protesters called on the government to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice and to introduce effective measures to protect Sri Lanka’s wild elephants.
The protest follows the death of Kavantissa on October 16, after the tusker underwent weeks of treatment for a gunshot injury.
The activists also urged authorities to strengthen wildlife protection measures and take effective steps to prevent similar incidents in the future, emphasizing the need to ensure the long-term conservation of Sri Lanka’s elephant population.
