Both spill gates of the Ambewela Reservoir were opened by eight inches this evening (20) following heavy rainfall in the Badulla area, Assistant Director of the Badulla District Disaster Management Unit E.L.M. Udayakumara said.
The gates are releasing water at a rate of 240.88 cubic feet per second (cusecs).
As the released water flows through the Agra Oya via Dayagama, Lindula, Agarapatana and Talawakele towards the Upper Kotmale Reservoir, water levels in the Agra Oya could rise.
The Irrigation Department has issued a warning highlighting the potential risk of rising water levels in the river.
