A suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting of Kavanthissa, an elephant, the Ministry of Environment has announced.
Police said the suspect is a skills development officer attached to the Ehetuwewa Divisional Secretariat.
The suspect was arrested during a special operation jointly conducted by the Walana Central Anti-Corruption Strike Force and the Department of Wildlife Conservation.
Police also seized a 12-bore firearm, a locally known “cap gun,” and 24 rounds of ammunition from the suspect’s residence.
According to police, information has also emerged suggesting that the suspect had previously shot an elephant known as “Diana.”
Further investigations are underway, and the suspect is expected to be produced before a court.
The Ministry of Environment said relevant authorities would continue joint operations to take strict legal action against illegal activities that threaten wildlife resources and the country’s natural heritage.
