The Ministry of Environment has said investigations are continuing to determine whether an organised group is involved in incidents of elephants being shot in Sri Lanka

Following the death of Kavanthissa, the Ministry has made a written request to the Police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate whether an organised network is operating behind the killing of wild elephants.

The Ministry said it had received information that a suspect had been arrested in connection with incidents involving the shooting of elephants. However, official confirmation is still required to establish whether the suspect belongs to an organised group and whether the incidents are interconnected.

The Ministry of Environment further stated that a comprehensive and independent investigation would be conducted into all parties involved in the killing of wild elephants, with steps to be taken to bring those responsible to justice.
