Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya attended the 36th anniversary celebration of Jathika Namal Uyana, home to South Asia’s largest rose quartz mountain range and the country’s largest Na forest, on October 10.
The event was held with the blessings of the Maha Sangha, including Venerable Wanawasi Rahula Thera, the founder of Jathika Namal Uyana, a nationally significant natural heritage site in Sri Lanka.
As part of the celebrations, the Prime Minister participated in a tree-planting programme, highlighting the importance of environmental conservation and protecting the country’s natural heritage.
Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Amarasuriya said the Government had taken practical measures to protect the environment rather than limiting its commitment to words.
She noted that the National Environmental Amendment Act had been passed in Parliament after 25 years, enabling stricter environmental impact assessments for development projects.
The Prime Minister also emphasised the importance of safeguarding Sri Lanka’s green heritage for future generations, calling on the public to join efforts to protect nature and the environment.
