A chief cashier at a leading state-owned bank in Sri Lanka has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for embezzling more than Rs. 130 million from the bank.

The sentence was imposed by Homagama High Court Judge Krishanthi Amarathunga following an investigation conducted by the Police Financial Crimes Investigation Division, which commenced in May 2025.

Investigations revealed that the accused had transferred more than Rs. 130 million from the bank to his personal account. This included over Rs. 110 million transferred to an account maintained at the bank’s Dehiwala branch.

The court also found him guilty of manipulating the bank’s software to convert funds into fraudulent money.

The court initially imposed a total sentence of 35 years, which is to be served over a period of 15 years.

The ruling highlights the seriousness of financial fraud within banking institutions and the importance of strengthening internal controls to prevent the misuse of public funds.
