The Chief Prelates of Sri Lanka’s three Buddhist Nikayas have expressed their displeasure over the decision to produce Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero, who is currently serving a prison sentence, before court wearing prison attire.
In a letter addressed to the Commissioner General of Prisons, the Chief Incumbents stated that requiring the Buddhist monk to appear before court in prison clothing was inappropriate.
They emphasized that the authority to disrobe a Buddhist monk rests solely with the relevant Sangha Sabha.
The Chief Prelates also requested that Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero be permitted to appear before court wearing his monastic robes.
