World Teachers’ Day is celebrated internationally on October 5 each year to recognize the invaluable contribution of teachers to education and society.
The day was introduced by UNESCO in 1994 and commemorates the adoption of the 1966 UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which established international standards for the teaching profession.
In Sri Lanka, Teachers’ Day is observed on October 6, marking the adoption of the Sri Lanka Teachers’ Service Constitution in 1994.
The occasion highlights the important role teachers play in shaping students’ futures and supporting them to reach their full potential.
As the education sector continues to evolve, teachers are adapting to new teaching methods, technologies and educational standards. The annual observance also emphasizes the need to support, respect and value teachers for their lasting contribution to individuals and communities.
