The Department of Meteorology has issued a severe lightning advisory for several parts of the country.

Thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are expected at several places in the North Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, Western and North Central provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara and Mannar districts.

The Department warned that temporary localized strong winds may occur during thundershowers and urged the public to take adequate precautions to minimize the risk of lightning-related incidents.

The public has been advised to seek shelter indoors and avoid staying under trees during thunderstorms. People should also avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies.

The Meteorology Department further advised against using wired telephones and connected electrical appliances during thunderstorms and urged the public to avoid open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats.

People have also been warned to be cautious of fallen trees and power lines and to contact local disaster management authorities for emergency assistance when necessary.
