Sri Lanka’s first National School Nutrition Summit was held in Colombo under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. The Prime Minister said the government has allocated Rs. 33.6 billion this year for the school nutrition programme.

Speaking at the 2026 National School Nutrition Summit, she said the government aims to transform the programme into a broader initiative that not only improves the health of schoolchildren but also contributes to strengthening the local economy.

The school nutrition programme is implemented by the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education to provide meals to schoolchildren.

As of 2026, the programme covers around 1.5 million students in 8,990 schools across the country.

The summit also focused on analysing research data related to the programme and discussing its future activities and implementation strategies.
