Sri Lanka hosts its first World Snakes Conference, highlighting snakebite prevention, biodiversity conservation and human-wildlife coexistence.
Research shows that while nearly 10,000 snakes bites cases are reported annually in Sri Lanka, only a small number of the country’s snake species pose a serious medical threat.
Addressing the conference, the Environment Minister said the event should go beyond academic discussion and generate practical knowledge that can ultimately help save both human and wildlife lives.
Eight new books on snakes are also set to be launched at the conference, while the Postal Department plans to issue a commemorative stamp to mark the occasion.
