A total of 17,506 forensic reports related to drug cases have been issued during the past two months, Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara said.
The Minister made the remarks today (October 1) while attending the establishment of an integrated mechanism at the Kuruwita Prison.
According to the Minister, 9,061 reports were issued in August, while a further 8,445 reports were issued in September.
He said steps have been taken to expedite the issuance of forensic reports as part of efforts to reduce prison overcrowding.
The Minister also noted that necessary amendments are being made to legislation, including the Community Corrections Act, to help address the issue of prison congestion.
