Virat Kohli smashed a record-extending 55th ODI century as India defeated the West Indies by eight wickets in the first match of the three-match series in Thiruvananthapuram.
Chasing 296 for victory, India reached 300 for two in 41.4 overs, with Kohli remaining unbeaten on 139 off 88 balls, including 10 fours and nine sixes. Captain Shubman Gill also scored a century, making 110 before his dismissal.
Kohli’s innings saw him break several records previously held by batting great Sachin Tendulkar. He became the fastest batter to reach 15,000 ODI runs and also surpassed Tendulkar’s record for the most ODI runs scored in home conditions.
Kohli entered the match needing 59 runs to reach 15,000 ODI runs and 110 runs to overtake Tendulkar’s tally of 6,976 ODI runs in India.
The landmark century was Kohli’s 55th in ODIs, extending his second-place position on the all-time ODI run-scorers’ list behind Tendulkar, who finished his career with 18,426 runs.
Earlier, Justin Greaves scored 101, while John Campbell made 62 and Amir Jangoo remained unbeaten on 58 as the West Indies posted 295 for seven.
India now lead the three-match ODI series 1-0.
