Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on Monday.
Tharanga produced a winning throw of 88.55 metres to secure the gold medal and add another major international title to his outstanding 2026 season.
The victory comes after a remarkable run of form for the 23-year-old athlete. Earlier this year, Tharanga won the men’s javelin title at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a throw of 89.75 metres, becoming Sri Lanka’s first Commonwealth Games athletics gold medallist.
He also made history at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest earlier this month, winning the inaugural men’s javelin title with a throw of 91.09 metres. His season has included several major victories on the Diamond League circuit, while he also set a Sri Lankan national record of 92.62 metres in Rome in June.
Tharanga entered the Asian Games as the world’s No. 1-ranked men’s javelin thrower. His preparations for the competition were disrupted after five of his specialised javelins were damaged during a flight back to Sri Lanka from Budapest, but replacement equipment was subsequently arranged for his Asian Games campaign.
The Asian Games gold adds another landmark achievement to Tharanga’s rapidly developing international career and further strengthens his position as one of Sri Lanka’s leading athletes on the global stage.
