The six-month pilot project for introducing a demerit points system for drivers who commit traffic offences will begin in October, Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake said.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Ministry of Transport this morning (28), the Minister said the pilot programme is expected to continue until March 31 next year.
The Ministry has decided to introduce the demerit system as a measure to reduce road accidents in Sri Lanka. Under the proposed system, drivers will be allocated a specific number of points for a period of two years, with points deducted for traffic law violations committed on the roads.
The Ministry plans to implement the system through a digital platform, while further expanding the online system currently used for the payment of traffic fines.
The new system is expected to enable authorities to monitor traffic violations more effectively and encourage drivers to comply with road rules, the Ministry said.
