A total of 104 newly introduced Metro buses are set to be deployed on seven routes in the Western Province from tomorrow (29), with the aim of reducing traffic congestion in Colombo and providing a more comfortable and safer public transport service.
The new bus service is scheduled to be launched under the patronage of the President, with all arrangements in place to commence operations, Metro Bus Chairman S.M.U.P. Thilakaratne said.
The buses will operate on seven Colombo-centred routes according to scheduled routes and timetables, enabling passengers to reach their destinations more conveniently.
Thilakaratne said a key objective of the new service is to reduce the number of private vehicles entering Colombo, particularly vehicles carrying only one passenger.
He noted that many people currently use private vehicles to travel to and from work, often with only one person travelling in each vehicle, contributing to the high volume of traffic on Colombo's roads.
He said the introduction of the new bus service is expected to reduce the number of vehicles used for daily commuting and encourage more people to use public transport, thereby helping ease traffic congestion in Colombo.
