Police have urged property owners to exercise caution and conduct proper background checks before renting out houses, business premises or other properties. Speaking to the media, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Sajeewa Medawatte said drugs, weapons and other items linked to criminal activities are frequently recovered from rented properties.
He noted that some property owners rent out premises without properly checking the backgrounds of prospective tenants.
Police warned that property owners could face legal consequences if criminal activities are carried out on their premises, depending on the circumstances and applicable laws.
The public has also been urged to inform the police about suspicious individuals or activities in their neighbourhoods, particularly when unfamiliar persons are seen in the area.
