Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage has received a new javelin from the Sports Ministry ahead of his event at the 20th Asian Games in Japan.
Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage said the new javelin was brought from Sweden and handed over to Pathirage in Japan as he prepares for the competition.
The replacement equipment was provided after Pathirage’s javelins were damaged during air travel while he was returning to Sri Lanka following his recent international competitions.
Following the incident, the Sports Ministry had pledged to provide replacement equipment to ensure that the athlete’s preparations for the Asian Games would not be disrupted.
Pathirage is among Sri Lanka’s leading medal prospects at the Games. He recently produced a 91.09-metre throw at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship, further highlighting his credentials ahead of the Asian Games.
