The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has recorded a statement from Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa, who is currently in remand custody, as part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged Rs. 70 million bribe.
CIABOC officers visited Colombo Remand Prison and recorded the statement after the Colombo Chief Magistrate authorised the Commission to question Rajapaksa in connection with the investigation.
The investigation concerns allegations that former Krrish Group Director Janaki Siriwardena provided Rs. 70 million to Rajapaksa on three occasions in return for assistance in expediting the acquisition of the Transworks Square land in Colombo Fort, which is owned by the Urban Development Authority (UDA), for the Krrish Group.
Siriwardena was arrested by CIABOC on September 24 and subsequently ordered to be remanded until October 6 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama.
During the court proceedings, CIABOC officials requested permission to obtain a statement from Rajapaksa, who is being held in connection with a separate bribery investigation. The Magistrate granted the request and directed prison authorities to facilitate the process.
