Chinese sprinter Chen Yujie made history today (September 25) by breaking the long-standing women's 100m Asian Games record held by Sri Lankan sprint legend Susanthika Jayasinghe. Chen clocked an impressive 11.06 seconds to claim the new record at this year's Asian Games.
The previous record was established by Jayasinghe during the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, where she won the women's 100m event with a time of 11.15 seconds.
With her remarkable 11.06-second sprint, Chen Yujie has officially rewritten the record books, shattering the historic milestone after exactly 24 years.
The 17-year-old sprint star was asked afterwards how much faster she hopes to run. Chen’s answer? “I have no limits.”
The teenager held off Singapore's two-time Olympian Shanti Pereira, who clocked a season's best 11.21 to claim silver for the second consecutive Games. Bahrain's Edidiong Odiong completed the podium in 11.33.
For Chen, the victory came with an early birthday present.
"I will be turning 18 by the end of this year [in December]. In China, it's when we become adults. So this is the best present for my birthday, to be on the top of the Asian Games podium," she said after the win.
Despite her impressive performance, the teenager admitted she had battled with nerves ahead of her first Asian Games final.
