The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) conducted an emergency raid on a shop in the Puttalam district today (September 25) after an incident involving exorbitant late-night pricing went viral on social media. The intervention comes after the shop reportedly charged a customer a staggering Rs. 850 for a single photocopy.

The incident sparked widespread online discussion among locals regarding fair pricing practices and consumer exploitation. According to reports, the shop took advantage of the customer's extreme urgency and the lack of alternative services operating during the late-night hours. While standard daytime printing services in the area typically cost only a fraction of this amount, the lack of off-hour competition allowed the business to impose the extreme emergency rate.

Following the social media uproar, CAA investigating officers inspected the premises and secured necessary legal evidence regarding the violation of consumer laws. Authorities are currently preparing to file a lawsuit against the business in the relevant Magistrate's Court in the coming days.

The CAA issued a statement emphasizing that it remains highly vigilant regarding shops and businesses that mislead or exploit consumers, warning that strict legal action will be taken against such offenders. The Authority urges the public to report any market irregularities or unfair pricing to the CAA by dialing the 1977 hotline during standard office hours.
