Will Jacks starred with both bat and ball as England defeated Sri Lanka by 89 runs in the first ODI at Chester-le-Street on Tuesday.
England, after winning the toss and batting first, were bowled out for 265 in 48.1 overs. Harry Brook top-scored with 67 off 69 balls, while Jacks remained unbeaten on 46 off 47 deliveries. Joe Root made 44 before being dismissed by Sri Lankan debutant Sachindu Colombage.
Colombage impressed on debut, claiming 3 for 44 in his 10 overs, while Asitha Fernando took 3 for 53 for Sri Lanka.
In reply, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 176 in 37 overs. Captain Kusal Mendis scored 42 off 60 balls, while Dunith Wellalage contributed a quick 45 off 36 deliveries.
Jacks then completed a memorable performance by taking a career-best 5 for 22, including three wickets in one over to wrap up Sri Lanka's innings.
The victory marks England's fifth win in their last six ODIs, including two wins over Sri Lanka in Colombo in January.
The second ODI will be played in Leeds on Thursday, with the final match scheduled for The Oval on Sunday.
