The Department of Meteorology says a deep depression currently located over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal is moving west-northwestward and is likely to cross the northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha coasts of India tonight.
Although the system is not expected to have a direct impact on Sri Lanka, the associated wind flow is likely to further enhance rainfall over the southwestern parts of the island, according to the department’s 36-hour weather forecast.
Intermittent showers or thundershowers are expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North Western provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts. Some areas could receive heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm.
Light showers are also expected in the North Central Province and Mannar District.
Strong winds of around 40–50 kmph may occur at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, the North Central and North Western provinces, and the Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts.
The public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimise the risk of accidents caused by temporary strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
