The low-pressure area that was prevailing over the sea area of the Bay of Bengal, to the northeast of the island, has now developed into a depression. It is expected to further develop into a deep depression within the next 24 hours. Although this system will not have a direct impact on Sri Lanka, the prevailing rainy conditions in the southwestern part of the island are expected to continue due to the wind flow towards the system.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-western provinces and in Galle and Matara Districts. Heavy falls about 100 mm are likely at some places in the above areas.
Several spells of showers may occur in North-central province and Mannar district.
Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Uva province and in Batticaloa and Ampara districts after 2.00 p.m.
Strong winds of about (40-50) kmph can be expected at times over Western slopes of the Central hills, North-central and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale Districts.
The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
WEATHER FORECAST FOR SEA AREAS AROUND THE ISLAND DURING NEXT 24 HOURS

Due to its influence, wind and rainy condition over the Bay of Bengal will increase. Naval and fishing communities are warned not to venture to the sea areas in between 5°N and 22°N latitude and 85°E and 100°E longitude until further notice. Naval and fishing communities operating in those sea areas are advised to move away from the affected sea areas.
Navel and fishing communities engaging the activities over this sea areas are advised to be vigilant and be attentive to the future forecasts and bulletins issued by the department of meteorology in this regards.
Condition of Rain:
Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Hambanthota via Puttalam, Colombo and Galle. Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the other sea areas during the evening or night.
Winds:
Winds will be South-westerly. Wind speed will be (30-40) kmph.
Wind speed can increase up to (55-60) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
State of Sea:
The sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be rough at times.
The wave height may increase about (2.0 – 2.5) meters in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara.
Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
