A state-of-the-art 10-megawatt (MW) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will be officially commissioned in Galle today (20), as part of a national initiative to expand renewable energy integration and strengthen grid stability.

The system is designed to store surplus solar power generated during peak production hours and release it when required.

According to Dr. Pradeep Perera, Chairman of National System Operator (Pvt) Ltd, the initiative includes 16 separate 10 MW battery storage facilities at strategic locations across the island, with a combined capacity of 160 MW.

He said all 16 facilities, representing the full 160 MW capacity, are expected to be connected to and integrated with the national grid by next month.
