Plans are underway to establish emergency disaster response units at the Divisional Secretariat level in preparation for potential disasters with the onset of rainy weather.

Environment Minister Dr. Dhammika Patabendi said the local emergency response centres will operate in coordination with District Disaster Management Centres.

He said the new centres are expected to be established within the next two weeks.

The Minister added that preparedness drills will also commence within the same period to strengthen the country’s readiness to respond effectively to anticipated weather-related emergencies.
