The Road Development Authority (RDA) has issued a special safety advisory urging motorists travelling on expressways to exercise extra caution due to adverse weather conditions, including reduced visibility and slippery road surfaces.
The RDA has advised drivers to keep their headlights switched on even during daytime travel to improve visibility during heavy rain and mist. Motorists have also been urged to maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead and reduce their speed when driving in adverse weather.
Drivers are advised to avoid sudden braking, sharp steering movements and rapid acceleration, as wet road surfaces can increase the risk of skidding and loss of control.
The RDA has further instructed motorists to pay close attention to speed restrictions and other safety instructions displayed on electronic Variable Message Signs (VMS) installed along the expressways.
Motorists travelling during heavy rain or dense fog are advised to reduce their speed, with a maximum speed of 60 km/h recommended under such conditions. Drivers should use low-beam headlights and avoid using hazard lights while the vehicle is moving.
The RDA has also urged motorists to increase the following distance between vehicles to allow sufficient time to brake safely on wet roads.
In the event of a vehicle breakdown or emergency on an expressway, motorists can contact the RDA Expressway Emergency Operations Center on 1969 for assistance.
