The Department of Meteorology has issued a heavy rain advisory for the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and Uva provinces, as well as the Ampara and Batticaloa districts.
The advisory has been issued due to atmospheric disturbances in the lower atmosphere near Sri Lanka, which are causing cloudy conditions over the affected areas.
Intermittent showers or thundershowers are expected, with heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm possible at some locations.
The highest rainfall of 146.5 mm was recorded at Wasalathalarama in the Kirindiwela area of the Gampaha District between 8.30 a.m. yesterday (14) and 3.00 a.m. today (15).
Meanwhile, intermittent showers or thundershowers are expected in the sea areas extending from Negombo to Batticaloa, off the coast through Colombo, Galle, Hambantota and Pottuvil.
Winds are expected to blow from the southwest or from variable directions at speeds of around 25–35 kmph. Wind speeds may temporarily increase up to 50 kmph in the sea areas off the coast from Colombo to Pottuvil via Galle, Matara and Hambantota.
These sea areas may be fairly rough at times, while temporary strong winds and very rough seas are possible during thundershowers, the Department of Meteorology said.
