The atmospheric conditions are favorable for afternoon thundershowers in most parts of Sri Lanka today (13), according to the Department of Meteorology.
Heavy rainfall of around 100 mm is likely in some areas of the North Central, Central, Sabaragamuwa, Western and North Western provinces.
A few showers are also expected in the Western Province and in the Galle and Matara districts during the morning.
Meanwhile, showers may occur at several places in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
Showers or thundershowers may develop in the sea areas extending from Mullaittivu to Batticaloa via Trincomalee during the evening or night.
South-westerly winds are expected, with speeds of 30–40 kmph. Wind speeds may occasionally increase to around 50 kmph in the sea areas extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil.
The sea areas extending from Chilaw to Pottuvil via Galle, Matara and Hambantota are expected to be rough, with wave heights potentially reaching 2.0–3.0 metres.
The Department of Meteorology has urged naval and fishing communities operating in these sea areas to remain vigilant.
The public is also advised to take adequate precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
