More than 2,700 megawatts (MW) of power generation and storage capacity are expected to be added to Sri Lanka’s national grid through solar, wind and battery storage projects between 2027 and 2029, Power and Energy Minister Anura Karunathilaka said in Parliament today (11).
He said plans are in place to add 1,392 MW from solar power, 370 MW from wind power and 1,000 MW through battery storage during the three-year period.
The Minister said rooftop solar generation has also grown significantly in recent years, with around 2,500 MW currently being generated through rooftop solar systems.
However, he noted that surplus electricity generation occurs at times when demand is low, particularly on Sundays and public holidays.
As a result, certain restrictions have to be imposed on solar power generation at times to maintain the stability of the national grid, he said.
Karunathilaka said the planned introduction of large-scale battery storage would help address the issue by allowing excess electricity generated during the daytime to be stored and supplied to the grid during nighttime hours.
