Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya has directed the Police Special Investigation Unit to conduct an internal investigation into certain shortcomings and omissions identified in the handling of an ongoing investigation into a consignment of illegal drugs allegedly smuggled into Sri Lanka from Pakistan.
According to the Police Media Division, the drugs were allegedly concealed inside two containers transported from Pakistan and stored at the Colombo Port’s CICT Terminal before being seized by authorities.
The internal inquiry has been ordered to examine the shortcomings identified in connection with the handling of the case, police said.
However, police stressed that the internal investigation would not impede or interfere with the ongoing investigation into the two containers and the seized drug consignment.
The Central Crime Investigation Bureau is currently conducting the investigation into the seized containers.
The Police said the main investigation was being carried out transparently and in accordance with established procedures and due process.
