The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court yesterday (9) fined a bakery establishment Rs. 200,000 after the company pleaded guilty to charges of misleading consumers and selling expired bakery products.
The case arose following a sudden raid conducted by investigation officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) at the bakery.
During the inspection, officers found strawberry-flavoured cream buns displayed for sale despite their expiry date being April 16, 2026.
Following the raid, the CAA initiated legal proceedings against the bakery establishment.
When the case was taken up before Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court No. 05 yesterday, the defendant company pleaded guilty to the charges. The Magistrate subsequently imposed a fine of Rs. 200,000.
The CAA reminded consumers to carefully check the manufactured and expiry dates before purchasing food products.
The public can report establishments selling expired food products to the Consumer Affairs Authority by calling its hotline 1977 during office hours.
