The Sri Lanka Police is set to introduce a special emergency reporting service via WhatsApp to enable hearing-impaired individuals to contact law enforcement authorities quickly and effectively during emergencies.
Under the new initiative, members of the hearing-impaired community will be able to report emergencies to the Police through WhatsApp video calls instead of conventional voice calls.
Until a dedicated short code, similar to the 119 emergency hotline, is introduced, the service can be accessed via 011-2809980.
According to the Police, a specially trained officer attached to the 119 Emergency Call Division and proficient in sign language will respond to video calls made through the platform.
The information provided during the call will then be promptly forwarded to the nearest police station, enabling officers to take immediate action regarding the reported emergency or incident.
