The remains of Umnitath Sarathchandran, an Indian national inmate who died during the unrest at the Negombo Prison, were buried under special security arrangements on September 2, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) informed court.
The CID made the disclosure when the case relating to the Negombo Prison clash was taken up before Negombo Chief Magistrate Shilani Perera.
During the proceedings, investigators named a further 11 suspects in connection with the incident. The CID requested an order directing the Negombo Prison Superintendent to produce the suspects for an identification parade while wearing covered clothing.
According to investigators, 81 suspects have now been identified in connection with the incident.
The CID also informed court that around 2,200 statements have been recorded as part of the investigation.
Meanwhile, various items seized as evidence have been sent to the Government Analyst for examination. However, investigators told court that reports on those items have not yet been received.
The remains of Sarathchandran were buried at the Manyokkahena Public Cemetery, which is maintained by the Negombo Municipal Council.
