Sri Lanka’s Beach Volleyball team, which won the gold medal at the inaugural Central Asian Beach Volleyball Championship held in Thimphu, Bhutan, returned to Sri Lanka last night (08), arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport.

Sri Lanka Army’s Sandun Madhusanka and Sri Lanka Air Force’s Dileepa Chamika represented the country and secured the historic victory.

The championship was held from September 3 to 6, with 11 teams from seven countries in the Central Asian region taking part.

The Sri Lankan duo remained unbeaten throughout the tournament before defeating a strong Indian team in the final to claim the gold medal.

Officials from the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation, the sports divisions of the Sri Lanka Army and Air Force, as well as relatives of the two players, were present at the airport to welcome them.

Following their Central Asian championship triumph, the Sri Lankan Beach Volleyball team is set to represent the country at the Asian Beach Volleyball Championship, which is scheduled to begin in Japan on September 16.
