Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) Attorney-at-Law Dr. Ajith Rohana has retired from the Sri Lanka Police after an illustrious 38-year career.
A ceremonial guard of honour was held today at the Welagedara Stadium in Kurunegala to mark his retirement and honour his longstanding service to the Police Department.
Dr. Rohana, who most recently served as the SDIG in charge of the North Western Province, holds a notable place in Sri Lanka Police history as the youngest officer to be promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG).
A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) graduate of the Open University of Sri Lanka, Dr. Rohana was also an Attorney-at-Law who practised before the Supreme Court. His legal expertise, leadership and public service earned him widespread recognition, including an honorary doctorate awarded in 2020.
He became a household name across Sri Lanka during the COVID-19 pandemic while serving as Police Media Spokesman. His clear communication, professional conduct and approachable manner made him a highly recognisable figure during one of the country's most challenging periods.
Born in Kosgama, Avissawella, Dr. Rohana received his education at Ananda College, Colombo, where he was known for his public-speaking skills and debating ability.
Over the course of his career, he held several senior positions within the Police Department and served as a board member of the National Child Protection Authority. He also served as Senior Deputy Inspector General overseeing the Southern, North Western and Eastern Provinces.
While his official retirement date is September 11, a ceremonial farewell was held today in recognition of his distinguished career and contribution to the Sri Lanka Police.
