Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser and Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa, who is currently in remand custody, was brought to Parliament today (08) to attend the parliamentary sitting.
The move followed permission granted by Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne after a request was submitted through the Parliamentary Opposition Leader’s Office. Prison authorities made arrangements to escort the MP from custody to Parliament.
Rajapaksa is currently being held in remand custody until September 18 in connection with an investigation by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) into the controversial Airbus aircraft procurement involving SriLankan Airlines. He was arrested by CIABOC following several hours of questioning and has denied any wrongdoing.
His attendance at Parliament comes after the SLPP requested that arrangements be made for him to participate in parliamentary sittings despite his remand status. Parliament is scheduled to meet from September 8 to 11, with the necessary arrangements made by prison authorities following instructions from the parliamentary administration.
