The Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya has decided to restrict the participation of its famed tusker “Vasana” in regular Peraheras, citing concerns over the elephant’s health and welfare.
Basnayake Nilame of the Devalaya, Thilina Madushanka, said Vasana, who is 58 years old, will no longer be made available for ordinary Peraheras held in various parts of the country.
Vasana, who carries the sacred casket of the Devalaya, is highly revered by devotees and has received numerous requests to participate in Peraheras across the island.
However, the Basnayake Nilame said transporting the elderly tusker long distances by truck for such events places considerable physical strain on the animal.
Accordingly, the Devalaya has decided to limit Vasana’s participation to only a few major historical processions, including the Kandy Esala Perahera.
The decision has been taken with the aim of prioritising the health and welfare of the 58-year-old tusker.
