The 63rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council began today (07) in Geneva, Switzerland, with discussions expected to focus on a range of pressing human rights issues around the world.
The session will continue until October 7, with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk delivering the opening remarks.
A United Nations report on the human rights situation in Sri Lanka is also scheduled to be presented during the session. The report, prepared by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), is expected to examine developments relating to reconciliation, accountability and human rights in the country.
The Council is also expected to consider human rights concerns involving women and girls in Afghanistan, as well as ongoing crises in Sudan, Venezuela and the Middle East.
Reports and updates on these situations will be considered during the month-long session, with the Council expected to adopt relevant resolutions following its deliberations.
